You’d think that the Dutch collecting society for composers and music publishers Buma/Stemra would actually distribute the money they collect to pay musicians. Well, they don’t. Instead they ‘burned‘ 14 milion euro during the stock exchange market crisis of the past few months and at the same time bought themselves office chairs worth 2.350,50 Euro per piece. Nice.

The whole smells awfully disgusting knowing they had plans to start charging bloggers for embedding YouTube videos, whatever the number of plays, whatever the length of the videos. They had to pull back quickly after bloggers worldwide protested against it. Now we know why they desperately needed so much money and now we also know that they are actually acting like a bank, playing with other people’s money instead of just taking a cut out of it. Nasty business…

The Dutch collecting society for composers and music publishers Buma/Stemra has cancelled its plan to charge Dutch bloggers and website owners for using embedded YouTube music videos. The decision came after huge protests in the online community, in Holland but also abroad.

Here’s the message (in Dutch) posted on the Buma/Stemra website to explain their quick u-turn:

Buma / Stemra komt internetgebruikers tegemoet

Hoofddorp, 9 oktober 2009 – Buma / Stemra behartigt de belangen van auteurs en componisten van muziek. Deze beroepsgroep is verheugd over de toename van het gebruik van hun repertoire op het internet maar moet vaststellen dat daar vaak geen redelijke vergoedingen tegenover staan.

Tegen die achtergrond heeft Buma / Stemra op 1 oktober jl. haar tarieven voor 2010 gepubliceerd voor gebruik van muziek op het internet. Onderdeel daarvan was het tarief voor niet-bedrijfsmatig muziekgebruik door middel van zgn. embedded files. Dit onderdeel van het tarief heeft tot grote commotie geleid bij een breed publiek en in de volksvertegenwoordiging.
Deze commotie heeft Buma / Stemra niet onberoerd gelaten. Buma / Stemra heeft na overleg binnen haar branche organisatie, VOICE, besloten om het tarief voor niet-bedrijfsmatig gebruik van muziek in embedded files niet ten uitvoer te brengen (zoals particuliere profielen op sociale netwerken).

Buma / Stemra blijft van mening dat er een vergoeding dient te zijn voor auteurs en componisten van muziek voor het gebruik van hun werk, ook op het internet. Om tot een dergelijke vergoeding te komen gaat Buma / Stemra in overleg met betrokken partijen. Ook zullen VOICE en Buma / Stemra gezamenlijk overleg zoeken met de Minister van Justitie over dit onderwerp.

The Dutch collecting society for composers and music publishers Buma/Stemra plan to charge Dutch bloggers and website owners rather ridiculously high sums for using embedded YouTube music videos. The organisation dug up an ‘old’ idea from 2008 to start charging bloggers for every embedded video they have on their site starting from 2010. The prices (ex VAT) for embedding videos are:

• 6 embedded files € 130 / year
• 12 embedded files € 260 / year
• 30 embedded files € 650 / year
• 31 and more embedded files € 650 x (number blocks of 30 files) / year

Length or total views have no single impact on the prices. The industrial music magazine Side-Line said that if it would have a Dutch owner, it would have to pay no less than € 65.000 (ex VAT) per year because the site has over 3000 embedded music videos in news articles.
